stargate universe

so anyway, i came to the SG fandom late. of course, i watched the film... it was one of my favs. when sg1 first premiered, i didn't have showtime, so i could only catch it occasionally, at friends' houses. when it switched to scifi, i didn't have cable at all... but i did sort of keep up with it via some of the fanfic that began appearing... it wasn't until later, much, much later that i was able to watch the show ... and i quite liked it.

it's not in my top five all time sci fi shows, but it's top ten, for sure.

i was pretty excited for atlantis, but damn that show bored me to tears. i don't know if it was the fact that for a show with two women, there was an awful lot of testosterone, or if it was that mckay was like a grown up, potty trained wesley crusher. he'd mess up, fix it, and all would be hunky dory. ugh.

maybe it was the fact that the characters didn't seem to GROW. the eps i liked were the ones were we got to see the various folks step outside of their regular roles...

anyway... i lost interest in atlantis long before it went off air... so it was with some trepidation that i eyeballed the coming of stargate universe.

i mean, really... haven't we done this before? (lost in space, voyager, yada yada yada...)

but the visuals were pretty. and i was interested in the fact that, but for a few folks, most of the stars weren't STARS (whamaslamma over the head with their mega movie credits) i like seeing good character actors step up and really lead a show.

plus it had ming na, whom i've always liked. i liked her on ER, and i enjoyed her voice work on mulan and final fantasy: spirits within.

oh yeah, and she was playing a lesbian.

holy mama call the cows and plan a party.

SERIOUSLY? a real life lesbian character on a SYFY (oh and don't get me started about the sciffy name change) show?? hot damn and crackerjack hoppers.

but of course, they were going to screw it up, right? she'd be a lesbian for thirty seconds. or die in the pilot. or somehow forget she was ahem, you know, GAY and a woman lovin' type woman. (no, no, i'm not one of those types... but if you say the "L" word, then deliver on the "L" word.)

now... i can't say for certain if we're going to be led down the garden path...

but over the last few weeks i've been watching this show, and yeah, Ming Na's character isn't as integral as i would LIKE her to be, but then... we've really only seen things from a mostly military/science perspective... not too much civilian yet, and her character is on the Civ side of the coin.

but.

yeah, but... things are going very well. so well that i am cautiously optimistic... for a little while, anyway.

so, if you like good sci fi, and want to see more fairly well rounded lesbians on tv (or heck, if you just want to see the very hot Ming Na getting kissy face with a woman...) then tune in. i think you'll enjoy yourself :)

so flist... are YOU watching SGU?

I've been watching. I still miss the original of course, but I'm giving it a chance. I've been more bored with some of the episodes than I ever was with SGA.

yeah but seriously? sgu gave us the lesbian goodies. big time. i mean, not naked sexy times kind, but still... no imagination required to see the subtext, it was there in maintext spades :)

True, the last episode was really good - certainly showed some promise. I was thinking more in terms of the earlier episodes. I found a few of them boring. I can't stand Telford and Rush. I was happy to see Young kick Telford's ass. I do like Eli - although he does sometimes act like a child. But then, he is a kid.

Have you been watching Sanctuary? Now, that is turning out to be awesome. Amanda Tapping is really getting the chance to prove that she is an amazing actress.

i'm behind on sanctuary. telford is supposed to be an ass, and as i understand it, won't be on the show for long. rush is a typical head in the clouds, pure "scientist" in the way that rod mckay should have been... i understand arrogance and drive when it's coupled with a serious tone. i just could never take rodney seriously. eli is a spoiled little kid... who hasn't realized that he's all grown up now. when it happens, i think we're going to see something like the daniel effect... he'll maintain most of his youthful enthusiasm, but he'll have a core of seriousness that will make you respect him.

I'm having real trouble getting into it, based on what I've seen of it so far. I finally watched all of SG1 after reading fanfic for it (well Sam/Janet fanfic) for years. I fell hard for Atlantis, and its crack happy fandom, despite realising that it wasn't that good, and sometimes it disappointed and angered me. I'm prepared to give Universe a go, but so far I have nothing to excite me other than Ming Na.

i like the kid. he's funny, interesting, and not too martystuish.

i like the interplay between the ppl of destiny and earth. i like that it isn't about the transplanted human culture of the week. i like that the ship is still so much of a mystery to them... that they're exploring it, instead of planets. there's a lot of interesting paths that can be taken.
