hmm...
well, i'm not sure why i gravitated toward this form of body modification. i've an aversion to needles, so getting a tattoo should seem like a crazy idea for me, but honestly, getting inked and getting a shot are nothing alike.
as a child, i wrote incessantly upon myself. i suspect my mother and grandmother despaired of ever seeing me without some form of ink upon my skin... whorls, scrawls, scribbles, flames, tic-tac-toe games... even the typical names and phone numbers made their way across my flesh... or the legs of my jeans LOL
getting my first tattoo at 18 seemed a natural outgrowth of that scribbling...
i enjoy my art. each image means something to me, whether it be a celebration of life or an homage to my particular flavor of faith... it's why i have yet to consider inking my back... i want to be able to look at my tattoos, to remember getting them, when and where and why...
the scarab was my first professional tat (i have/had some extremely amateur pieces that i did myself, but have since been covered/will eventually be covered)... it was an image on a wall at this brand new place on Telegraph avenue in Berkeley... i am a fan of egyptian symbols and this was so colorful and neat... i didn't realize at the time that it was also representative of a cover for a Journey album... LOL for me, it represents life eternal.
the flaming pentacle is actually a cover up of an older pentacle that i did myself... this one is MUCH better, believe me... for me, it represents my faith in the goddess bridget, whose realm is fire and whose form is female...
the flame shaped ankh, rainbow colored... this is the tattoo that i designed and drew... i wanted something that was "pride flag"-ish without being a plain rectangle or a triangle or something, that also fit in with the rest of my tattoos... i like to doodle flames and i like the ankh shape (female symbol, symbol of life) so i played around until i had a flamey, sinuous shape i liked :)
and my newest, the tie-dye goddess... because i'm pagan, and i love tie dye :) actually, the tie dye was the artist's idea... i just wanted her colorful... he suggested that he mimic a shirt i was wearing :) i think it turned out pretty cool! :)
anyway...
why tattoos?
because i really like them :)
