i try not to read incomplete stuff. i will if a) i'm bored or b) i'm beta-reading (which i rarely do anymore...)
as for characters... well... one of the reasons i won't post unfinished works is so that if (such as has happened with my other fannish obsessions) my head gets turned by something new (ooh shiney...) and i start writing in another fandom, or even my own stuff... my readers aren't left hanging.
that's why all my stuff has a definite end... there may be threads left unstitched, but they're usually the type that don't actually have to be answered to have a satisfying read. :D
