i have a slightly more modern sprint cell... it's only three years old. it is a lot of work but i think the results are well worth it :)

i've used color channels when i want to smooth out something in one tone... or to peel out a certain level of color ... it's really just easier though to use the hue bar. :D

as for what you've seen... LOL well... they're all there :)
